SSN Institutions announces 10th Annual Scholarships Awards

Chennai, 8th September, 2008: The not-for-profit SSN Institutions established by the SSN Educational and Charitable Trust today announced its 10TH Annual Scholarship Awards at the SSN Institution campus. Scholarships worth a total of Rupees four crores were distributed to 405 students based on the academic performance, economic need and excellence in Sports. The scholarships were distributed by the Chief Guest of the Occasion, Mr. Gopal Srinivasan, Director, TVS Electronics in the presence of the Founder, Shri Shiv Nadar.

SSN Educational and Charitable Trust was founded by Padma Bhushan Shri. Shiv Nadar, Chairman, HCL Technologies as his personal initiative to give back to the society.

The SSN Trust Scholarships was instituted in 1999 and since then the Institution has continued its tradition by disbursing scholarships every year. Till date, the SSN Trust Scholarships amounting to a total of Rs.28 crore have been disbursed to benefit 2000 students.

On the occasion, Padma Bhushan Shri. Shiv Nadar, Founder, SSN institutions, said, "scholarship are mainly to bridge the gap between the talent and the opportunities. These scholarships have opened opportunities for brilliant but economically less privileged students, especially from rural areas. Scholarships are awarded to meritorious students, based on the academic performance at the qualifying examinations for fresher's, and in the case of senior students, the performance during the previous year".

He added, "this year we have come up with a new idea of reaching this to the students directly by offering 20 full scholarships to the rural government schools toppers. Rs. 22 lakh has been exclusively allocated per year for the benefit of 1st rank holders across rural Government Higher Secondary Schools in Tamil Nadu. Additionally our scholarships have also benefited and aided 112 first generation learners by providing them access to technical education."

During the current academic year, 405 students are being awarded with the SSN scholarships. Of these, 215 students have received the scholarship on a Merit basis; 112 on Merit cum means Scholarships; 30 on sports scholarships; 23 students were awarded the Walk-in-Walk out scholarships and 5 students was awarded the Special scholarship instituted by SSN Alumni. 20 students received scholarships for the SSN School of Advanced Software Engineering (SSN SASE) Master's of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) course.

Ms.Kala Vijayakumar, President SSN Institutions, said "the origin and the motto of the Scholarship scheme is to service the nation by giving world class education to the deserving Students. Mr. Shiv Nadar's vision is that with good stewardship and encouragement to the young talent who can raise to the highest levels, in technocracy, leadership and as a good citizen. The SSN Scholarships aim at encouraging deserving students in need of economic support in realizing their potential by having access to SSN education."

Merit Scholarships are granted based on student performance in qualifying examinations for entrance into an SSN program. For those already pursuing their education at SSN, scholarships are granted based on their previous years academic performance.

The various scholarships and the criteria for selection are:
 
Merit Scholarship
Merit Scholarships are awarded to meritorious students of Engineering, MCA & MBA Programmes, based on the academic performance at the qualifying exam for freshers, and in the case of senior students, the performance during the previous year. The scholarship offers a waiver of tuition fees, free hostel stay and boarding / grant towards living expenses and an allowance for books.

Merit-Cum-Means Scholarship waivers tuition fee, provides free hostel stay and boarding/grant towards living expenses and an allowance for books. Academic performance and demonstrated economic need are the key criteria for this scholarship.

Full Scholarships
A Full scholarship holder will receive the amount towards the Tuition and Development fee, Special fee, a book fee of Rs.1, 500/- and a maintenance allowance of Rs.15, 000/-. The Sports scholarship holder will, in addition, receive the Training kit charges and cost of engaging a Coach, if any. The awardees of Waiver scholarships will receive the Tuition and Development fees paid by them during the year.

Waiver of Tuition Fee - The entire tuition fee for the first academic year is waived for first year students entering an SSN Institution. Students who secure the highest marks in the +2 examinations are eligible. Similarly, senior students are offered scholarships on the basis of their previous year's academic performance.

Walk-in-Walk-out Scholarships - absolutely free of cost education is granted to top ten rank holders of any State or Central Board Examination, including the TNPCEE at the +2 or equivalent level pursuing the B.E./B.Tech. Degree at SSN College of Engineering

Sports Scholarships are also granted to students with an outstanding record in Sports. Typically, students who have represented the State at National Level Competitions conducted by accredited Sports Boards are eligible.
 
About the SSN Institutions:
