| SSN Research Centre Launches
Path-breaking Street Lighting Project - Highly scalable
energy efficiency project, a first in India |
| |
Chennai, Friday, 5th September 08
- Padma Bhushan Mr Shiv Nadar, Founder - HCL and Founder,
SSN Institutions, today inaugurated the 'Green White light'
project at the SSN College of Engineering.
Green White Light is a pilot project at the SSN Campus
enabling photo-voltaic powered LED street lighting. At a
time when the world is seeking an answer to its energy
problems, the project is an initiative by the SSN Research
Centre (SSNRC) towards enhancing efficiency, reducing costs
in generation & utilization of energy for public good.
Speaking on the occasion, Shiv Nadar said, "SSN had tied up
with the Centre for Science, Technology and Policy Studies (CSTEP)
last year, with a promise of enabling cutting edge research
in areas that are relevant to current global concerns such
as energy efficiency. A year later the partnership has
delivered on that promise, of not just enabling world class
"laboratory" research, but ground level research
implementation that could be scaled up, replicated and
utilized for the society's benefit."
Professor V S Arunachalam, who heads the Research Advisory
Council at SSN and is the Founder of CSTEP, explained that
"Through a student internship program, a feasibility study
was carried out on replacing the existing grid connected
metal halide and sodium lamps in the street lighting in SSN
campus by white color Light Emitting Diode (LED) lanterns.
Additionally, these LED lanterns will be powered by
electricity generated by Photo Voltaic solar cell arrays
(hence Green)."
White LED lanterns are the emerging technology in street
lighting and a few cities in western countries (Germany and
Netherlands) and several more in China have begun
experimenting with such street lighting which is highly
energy efficient. This is the first time it has been done in
India.
SSN Research Centre expects to establish by 2009, a
demonstration platform in its 250 acre campus on Old
Mahabalipuram Road where town planners and energy
authorities can observe and study the functional
effectiveness, energy efficiency and cost savings of this
new technology.
The project is testimony to Institutions' attempt to build
research into every facet of education and establishes SSN
not only as an excellent academic institution but also an
excellent research institution. |

| About the SSN Institutions: |
The SSN Institutions endeavor to provide
world class research based education at affordable cost
through colleges including the SSN College of Engineering (SSNCE),
the SSN School of Management and Computer Applications (SoMCA)
and the SSN School of Advanced Software Engineering (SASE).
The Institutions are not-for-profit and managed by the SSN
Trust (Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar Educational and Charitable
Trust), which was founded in 1994 by Shiv Nadar, Founder,
HCL in honor of his father.
The SSN Institutions are located on the Old Mahabalipuram
Road-known as 'Cyber Corridor' of Chennai. The campus is
spread over 250 acres with a built up area of over 1 million
sq ft and is equipped with the state-of-the-art
infrastructure for learning including computers & internet
facilities networked by optic fibre links, modern workshops
& labs, seminar halls, auditorium, libraries, gymnasium, a
sports complex and residential accommodation for students
and faculty. The total students' strength is close to 3000.
The faculty student ratio is a favorable 1: 12. The
Institutions provide over 400 scholarships worth ~$1 million
every year to enable access to world class education for
meritorious students from across socio economic strata. |

| About SSN Research Centre's Research
Advisory Council: |
The vision of SSN is to build a
world-class institution that is at the cutting edge of
research, and to create and nurture potential Nobel
Laureates. The Research Advisory Council (RAC) has been set
up with the aim that research culture should be built into
every facet of education at SSN Institutions. Research
output should be incorporated into teaching to make academic
learning richer and more holistic.
The RAC, with Shiv Nadar as Chairman, has eminent internal
and external researchers of international renown to advice
and guide SSN Institutions towards achieving its goals.
Eminent people constituting the RAC are: |
- Dr. Raj Reddy, who has served as co-chair of Bill
Clinton's President's Information Technology Advisory
Committee (PITAC), and is on the Microsoft Technical
Advisory Board. He is Mozah Bint Nasser University
Professor of Computer Science and Robotics, School of
Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University.
- Dr. V.S. Arunachalam, Founder and Chairman, CSTEP,
Bangalore and former Chief Scientific Advisor to the PM
& Head of Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO).
- Dr. R. Natarajan, formerly Chairman, AICTE, Ministry
of HRD, Government of India and former Director, Indian
Institute of Technology, Madras.
- Dr. N. Balakrishnan, Associate Director, Indian
Institute of Science, Bangalore and Professor,
Information Science Division, Supercomputer Education
and Research Centre (SERC) and Professor, Department of
Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science,
Bangalore.
|
| SSN already has a world-class laboratory
headed by Prof. P. Ramasamy, Dean (Research) who is doing
ground breaking work in the area of crystal growth. Research
programs are also being initiated in the areas of
semiconductor research, nano-technology and bio-informatics.
Laboratories of international standards are being set up to
support these and other programs as well. |

| About CSTEP: |
Centre for Study of Science, Technology
and Policy (CSTEP) is a Section 25 (not-for-profit) research
and development Think Tank incorporated in Bangalore. Its
vision is to pursue scholarly, quantitatively rigorous and
independent research on technologies and policies that are
relevant to the country's strategic, economic and
technological future. It has in its Board a number of
outstanding scientists including Dr. V.S. Arunachalam who is
the Founder Chairman of the institution.
For the areas of study, CSTEP has chosen issues on Energy
Security, Food Security and National Security based on new
and emerging technologies. It has also a program to follow a
few areas of Information Technology and advanced Materials
that hold great promise. Their recent studies include the
relevance of ethanol economy for India and the desirability
of coal liquefaction for manufacturing fuel for vehicles. |
